Back to Vancouver!

I'm going to be visiting Vancouver for four days this upcoming weekend, and exhibiting at Anime Evolution. I can't believe it's been more than five years since I left Vancity and returned home to Toronto. I haven't been able to make it back since. Going to sell Storm Hawks, The Art of ReBoot, and break out Crozonia for the good folks. Can't wait.
And have some sushi.

Back from Licensing Expo '09

This week I traveled to Las Vegas for the Licensing Expo. A great trip, renewed some contacts I have been working on since last year's Expo. I also met some new people at great companies I would like to work with. I'm confident that something will come from this show.

Some thoughts and impressions:
The show was noticeably smaller than when it was in New York at the Javits. Certain company booths were also half the size as they were last year. The larger companies such as Dream Works, Sony Pictures, Hasbro etc... still occupy gigantic 1000+ square foot booths. but the industry as a whole is down. The licensing industry is a perfect microcosm of the global economy.

I went there not only to find licensed properties to publish by try to develop some IPs for companies that I want to work with. A couple spec artwork here and there could potentially lead to great things. Normally I wouldn't offer free artwork, but it's the recession. Hustle, work hard, pick the partners you want to work with. Foster relationships with these partners during the hard times, and hopefully when the economy picks up, you emerge as a major creative services/licensing partner.

Licensing Expo

The Licensing Expo is this week in Las Vegas. I will be there walking around, seeing what properties could be the next great Beach CS project. Could be a comic book, and artbook, posters....who knows?!!!

Beach CS works with Spin Master on top selling brand Bakugan

Over the last few months, we have been providing package artwork for Bakugan, the leading CCG (Collectible Card Game) brand in the market today. Bakugan leads Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic: The Gathering, World of Warcraft, and Chaotic. We have provided artwork in no less than 10 products in such a short span of time. We're looking forward to seeing those products on the market, and showcasing them on our site! Stay tuned.

Storm Hawks Comic Special - Rounding Third!

We're going to press with the Storm Hawks Comic Book Special, and there are a host of creators that have contributed to this amazing body of work.

- The cover is a collaboration between Andy Poon (Storm Hawks Art Director), myself and DMF colorist Peter Kostka.
-Peter, Jason Park of DMF Comics and myself have worked on the short stories - Phoenix Crystal, Origins, and reworked The Escape (originally by creator Asaph Fipke and Andy Poon).

Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo SOLD OUT!

Just wanted to thank the organizers of the Calgary Expo for a superbly run convention! Gavin and I were treated really well. I recommend all artists and fans make plans for the Calgary Expo next year! We shipped 5 boxes of The Art of ReBoot and sold out on Sunday afternoon with a couple hours remaining. All of the ReBoot posters were sold out as well. ReBoot is alive and well in fandom. Hope Rainmaker notices. The Storm Hawks ashcans were sold out, and Crozonia #2 and #3 were sold out! I brought home just two remaining copies of Crozonia #1!
One of the best shows I have ever attended. AND got killer sketches from Sergio Aragones, Mike Kunkel and Bryan Lee O' Malley. Go Canada, and go Calgary!

ReBoot Reunion at Anime Evolution

There is going to be a super cool ReBoot event in Vancouver this summer!
Anime Evolution, is being held at the brand new Vancouver Convention Centre, June 12-14 2009.
ReBoot Co-Creator Gavin Blair will be the headline guest. Other guests confirmed guests include Michael Benyaer (voice actor for original Bob) and Gary Chalk (voice actor for Turbo and Slash). There are more ReBoot related guests to be announced! Stay Tuned.

Storm Hawks Special

We're planning to produce a 48 page (tentative page count) Storm Hawks special that will come out this summer! Included will be a 10 page Origins adapation, 15 page Phoenix Crystal story, and a reformat of The Escape. There will be pinups galore, from myself, DMF Artist Jaime Antonio, Randy Green (Witchblade, X-Men), Sean 'Cheeks' Galloway (the art director of Hell Boy Animated series, Spectacular Spider Man Animated series, Marcio Takara (The Incredibles), Sanford Greene (Marvel Adventures Spider Man). Andy Poon, the art director of Storm Hawks will be drawing the cover!
